Feminism, Art, & Global Activism:
WMNST 497 is a 2-Part International Service Learning Course that seeks to develop projects and programs that emphasize service learning as something that occurs in partnership with and at the invitation of individuals, organizations and communities in Tanzania. It is our goal to establish reciprocal and sustainable programs and projects that put the needs of the community first, that foster creativity, open up cross-cultural communication, work toward empowerment, build self-esteem, and that seek justice.
Spring Seminar (3 Credits): The goal of the Spring seminar is to provide students with the necessary knowledge of Tanzania, theories of service learning, & to develop comprehensive service learning project plans in collaboration with their Tanzanian partners. It also includes free Kiswahili language classes offered in partnership with the Paul Robeson Cultural Center & International Student Services.
Summer Service Learning (3 Credits): The goal of the 6 week summer course is the implementation of students service learning projects
in Tanzania with their Tanzanian partners. Additionally, the 4 week travel is designed to develop friendships among Tanzanians, gain a deep understanding of Tanzanian culture, and struggle to cultivate sustainable and reciprocal programs. Students are advised by Penn State faculty, researchers, artists, and local community members while in residence at Penn State and are further mentored by PSU faculty members and Tanzanian community members.
Prior participants are asked to consider returning to serve as student mentors and as links to previous community projects.
